Don’t believe everything you see on the Discovery Channel or read in the New York Times. I decided to watch a Discover program recently [1.], about the Bible. It was called "Beasts of the Bible," if I remember rightly. It started off by showing footage of mermaids. I thought for a moment I had the Disney Channel. But no, it was Discovery imagineers.
Mermaids are more like something a believer in evolution would swallow. It sounds interesting--women with a fish tail. Perhaps they could call them homomermadillia. Hypothesize that they may have been around, say, 200 million years ago. That would impress believers.
Instead of believing what people say about the Bible, atheists should turn Carl Sagan’s Baloney Detection Kit towards their own theory. They will find plenty of baloney there. Can evolution be tested? No. Where does the preponderance of evidence point? Towards an Intelligent Designer. So much for skeptics practicing what they preach.
[1.] Correction: It was Animal Planet.
